Tips for a Healthy Summer

At Accountable Healthcare, we love our healthcare professionals. Just wanted to send out a few tips as we enjoy summer.

  • Use shade, wide-brimmed hats, clothing that covers, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 for sun protection.
  • Use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to prevent mosquito bites and ticks.
  • Apply sunscreen before insect repellent. After you come indoors, check your clothing, body, and pets for ticks.
  • When outdoors, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts, as well as wrinkles around the eyes.
  • Eat healthy food to support muscles, strengthen bones, and boost immunity.

In the summer, it is easy to add fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Enjoy a cup of mixed fresh berries - blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries -- every day. Berries help you load up on antioxidants, which may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of age-related illnesses. And berries are high in fiber, which helps keep cholesterol low and may even help prevent some cancers.

Stay hydrated. Drink water (fluoridated tap or unsweetened bottled or sparkling) instead of sugary or alcoholic drinks to reduce calories and stay safe. Add pieces of fruit to water and other beverages for extra flavor.

Summer is the perfect time to get out and enjoy physical activities. Immediate health benefits include stronger bodies, better sleep, and reduced anxiety/stress levels. Choose activities that you enjoy biking, walking in nature, swimming, or pickleball-an addictive game for all ages, not just the seniors.

Most important-have fun!

Enjoy the beautiful summer weather!
